Home Means A Lot of Things

In this blog entry, the word "home" is in the song title of each of these songs and it has a lot of meanings to different artists. Here's a sampling: From tequila worms, to tending gardens, to mattresses, to waking up in a strangers arms and finally to a suburban home just like mom and dad had. So I'm going to let the lyrics doing the talking this time!

"Home at Last" by Steely Dan - This 1977 classic song speaks about "Well the danger is on the rocks is surely past, still I remain tied to the mast, Could it be that I have could it be that I have found my home at last."

"No Place like Home" by Squeeze - This 1985 song, "But up on the mattress there is no place to go, There's no place like home."

"Home" Jack Johnson - This 2010 song, has a different place for home, "Got to get home there's a garden to tend. Their own family tree teaches them thank you and please. So I try to understand what I can't hold in my hand, And whatever I find,
I'll find way back to you."

"Dyin' to Get Home" - by John Doe This 1990 song, has an interesting metaphor in it. Check out these lyrics, "I got a nickel in my pocket and a heartache on the phone. Swim right across the sea of tequila and ride that worm. Maybe my dreams will come true as I'm French kissing that worm."

"Home Sweet Home" - by Motley Crue This hair metal power ballad from 1985 rocks them all. Okay, so I have a little crush on Tommy Lee, but this song still Rocks!! Check out the lyrics and see, "Take me to your heart, Feel me in your bones, I'm on my way, Home sweet home, tonight."

"Suburban Home" - by The Descendants This punk favorite son song from 1982 has a different view on home, it's more of an image. Here's some lyrics for you, "I don't want a hippie pad Dad, I want a house just like mom and dad had, I want a suburban home."

"Home" - by Iggy Pop This song from Iggy from 1990 Here's what Iggy thinks,"Everyone needs a home, the life we live is tricky, tricky. I love my family." Iggy has a sensitive side, who knew.

"Home" - by Sheryl Crow This 1996 song has a haunting sound to it and it is quite revealing about her home. Here's some lyrics, I'm afraid of feeling nothing. I'd like to see the Riviera, and slow dance underneath the stars and I'd like to watch the sun come up in a stranger's arms. This is home."

"In This House That I Call Home"- by X This 1981 song has it's own meaning for home. Here's a sampling, "In this house that I call home, nobody knows the party rules, gotta get in but there's no room in this house that I call home."

Women Who Rock

Women Who Rock

This blog entry is inspired by and dedicated to these amazingly talented and inspirational women who are singer/singwriters who create music with their own sense of style and heart and soul. Thanks for making such unforgettable music for all of us to share!

"Magic Man" by Heart - This 1976 song helps me travel back to my early high school years. This song is required listening in the 70's. The powerful vocals of Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy on killer guitar make for a powerful but melodic song. A huge hit for this Great Girl Band, by the way. Oh, and we can't forget the cool synthesizer being played that gives it's authentic 70's sound and flashback element!

"Difficult Kind" by Sheryl Crow - This 1998 song comes in handy after a big fight, difficult time or break-up in a relationship. It has very deep lyrics, stating how she's changed and look what love has done to her. Some of Sheryl's finer work, she has a lot of relationship songs in her repertoire. This one rocks!!

"It's Too Late" by Carole King - This 1971 song was another huge hit for this performer, Carole King. Here we go again, another break-up song. She clearly states what's going on in her relationship. Here is one lyric, "It's too late baby, we've tried, but something has died." She's so bold to speak her truth in the early 70's but maybe that's what we needed then and now.
Someone else to say what we couldn't.

"Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb - This 1994 song was very catchy but it has break-up song written all over it at a closer glance. I always liked these lyrics, "You say, I only hear what I want to." But the rest of the songs talks about leaving and being sad and "Miss you." She also made girls wearing cool glasses look even cooler!! Thanks Lisa!!

"Help Me" by Joni Mitchell - This 1974 song helped Joni make it to the mainstream. It was very melodic and catchy at the same time. She captures what it feels like to be in love "again". Sample some of her lyrics "I think I'm falling, In love too fast, It's got me hoping for the future." She is an amazing songwriter!!

"Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders (lead singer Chrissie Hyndes) - This 1978 song was in the beginning stages of the new wave/punk movement. Songs like this empowered women, with this tough girl image portrayed in her very high rotation video for this hit song. It was quite seductive in it's lyrics too. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it.

"I Will Remember You" by Sarah Mc Laughlin - This 1993 song by songstress Sarah is very beautiful and has heartfelt lyrics like these "I will remember you, Will you remember me, Don’t let your life pass you by." I will always remember this song because a radio station in Northern California plays it on the 9/11 anniversary every year and I usually cry because it's so appropriate. This is such a beautiful song!!

"Running up That Hill" by Kate Bush - This 1985 song had a haunting sound to it. Kate's avant garde style shows through here. Here are some of her powerful lyrics, "Let me steal this moment from you now. C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling, Let's exchange the experience, oh..."

"Righteously" by Lucinda Williams - This 1990 song has great lyrics to go with her smokey voice. Here's a sample,"Arms around my waist, You get a taste of how good this can be, Be the man you ought to tenderly, Stand up for me."

"Suddenly, I See" by KT Tunstall - The 2006 song (I'm finally in the 2000's.) This Scottish rocker makes songs with great beats and good lyrics, here's a sample, "She's a beautiful girl, And everything around her is a silver pool of light, The people who surround her feel the benefit of it, It makes you calm."

Music from our Belmont Shore Days 1985-1988

Monica's Tiki Lounge Music Blog

"Bastards of Young" by The Replacements - This alternative rock band never got the recognition they deserved. Their music is very poppy and is known for it's great lyrics like this, "The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please." We actually were lucky enough to meet the lead singer/songwriter, Paul Westerberg, at Virgin Records when they still existed.

"Voices Carry"by Til Tuesday (Aimee Mann) - This was a HUGE radio hit in 1985. I can easily remember the year it was the year we got married. On our honeymoon in Hawaii our hotel had MTV, so we were really excited, since we did not have it at home. All I know is that we saw this video about a hundred times.

"Blister in the Sun" by Violent Femmes - This catchy band was unique for it's some times sexually-laced content. It's also known for the nasally voice of Gordon Ganos.

"Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for" by U2 - This is one of my all time favorite bands and when this song hit in 1987, you could even hear this song on the easy listening stations. Yikes! It had that much mass appeal. I found comfort in this song because I was going through a lot of growing pains in my 20's and this song helped calm me down.

"Love Plus One" by Haircut 100 - This is a very poppy, upbeat, fun song. It made VH1's Top 100 one-hit wonders, so it was a bonafide hit from the 1980's. My husband told me the name of the band means a full body waxing, a pretty weird name for a band. Especially since full body waxing was not very popular in the 1980's like it is now.

"Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer - Who could forget this unique song and mainly eye-candy video with Mr. Palmer surrounded by beautiful girls pretending to play instruments. This is another catchy tune that had a little soulful sound to it.

"Girlfriend in a Coma" by The Smiths - The haunting sounds of the Smiths was refreshing with all the synthesizer-pop sounds that were around at the time. The lyrics of the song were pretty out there here's a sampling, "Girlfriend in a coma, it's serious."

"Why Can't I be You" by The Cure - Another smash hit from the 1980's, this song was played everywhere. These guys were considered goth for their time with Robert's makeup and moody sound.

"End of the World as We Know it" by REM - I liked REM in the early 1980's as an alternative radio/college band. But they had a longevity that followed them through the 2000's. The main memory I have of this song, was when we were going from 1999 to 2000. There was a big scare with computer systems failing and the world supposedly ending. So this song's lyrics kept going through my head at the year of the century,"It's the End of the World as We Know it."
