Women Who Rock

Women Who Rock

This blog entry is inspired by and dedicated to these amazingly talented and inspirational women who are singer/singwriters who create music with their own sense of style and heart and soul. Thanks for making such unforgettable music for all of us to share!

"Magic Man" by Heart - This 1976 song helps me travel back to my early high school years. This song is required listening in the 70's. The powerful vocals of Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy on killer guitar make for a powerful but melodic song. A huge hit for this Great Girl Band, by the way. Oh, and we can't forget the cool synthesizer being played that gives it's authentic 70's sound and flashback element!

"Difficult Kind" by Sheryl Crow - This 1998 song comes in handy after a big fight, difficult time or break-up in a relationship. It has very deep lyrics, stating how she's changed and look what love has done to her. Some of Sheryl's finer work, she has a lot of relationship songs in her repertoire. This one rocks!!

"It's Too Late" by Carole King - This 1971 song was another huge hit for this performer, Carole King. Here we go again, another break-up song. She clearly states what's going on in her relationship. Here is one lyric, "It's too late baby, we've tried, but something has died." She's so bold to speak her truth in the early 70's but maybe that's what we needed then and now.
Someone else to say what we couldn't.

"Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb - This 1994 song was very catchy but it has break-up song written all over it at a closer glance. I always liked these lyrics, "You say, I only hear what I want to." But the rest of the songs talks about leaving and being sad and "Miss you." She also made girls wearing cool glasses look even cooler!! Thanks Lisa!!

"Help Me" by Joni Mitchell - This 1974 song helped Joni make it to the mainstream. It was very melodic and catchy at the same time. She captures what it feels like to be in love "again". Sample some of her lyrics "I think I'm falling, In love too fast, It's got me hoping for the future." She is an amazing songwriter!!

"Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders (lead singer Chrissie Hyndes) - This 1978 song was in the beginning stages of the new wave/punk movement. Songs like this empowered women, with this tough girl image portrayed in her very high rotation video for this hit song. It was quite seductive in it's lyrics too. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it.

"I Will Remember You" by Sarah Mc Laughlin - This 1993 song by songstress Sarah is very beautiful and has heartfelt lyrics like these "I will remember you, Will you remember me, Don’t let your life pass you by." I will always remember this song because a radio station in Northern California plays it on the 9/11 anniversary every year and I usually cry because it's so appropriate. This is such a beautiful song!!

"Running up That Hill" by Kate Bush - This 1985 song had a haunting sound to it. Kate's avant garde style shows through here. Here are some of her powerful lyrics, "Let me steal this moment from you now. C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling, Let's exchange the experience, oh..."

"Righteously" by Lucinda Williams - This 1990 song has great lyrics to go with her smokey voice. Here's a sample,"Arms around my waist, You get a taste of how good this can be, Be the man you ought to tenderly, Stand up for me."

"Suddenly, I See" by KT Tunstall - The 2006 song (I'm finally in the 2000's.) This Scottish rocker makes songs with great beats and good lyrics, here's a sample, "She's a beautiful girl, And everything around her is a silver pool of light, The people who surround her feel the benefit of it, It makes you calm."
